After missing the game in the Bernabéu last season, Deco is hoping to make it this time. The Portuguese midfielder is also confident that the Blaugrana will win if the team plays like it has been in recent weeks.
With the game in a week's time, Deco spoke to fcbarcelona.com and Barça TV about the possibility of beating Real Madrid in their own stadium and about the excellent run of form that Frank Rijkaard's team are currently enjoying. He also states that Barcelona are better than Madrid in every area, although warned that they will give their opponents respect because they have some great players too. With millions around the world watching the classic encounter, the former Porto star knows that it will be a game to remember.
After the injury how do you feel looking ahead to the Madrid-Barça game?
"It has come at the best time for me. I am back in training and really want to play. So for me it is the ideal game at the ideal time."
This will be your first game at the Bernabéu as a Barcelona player. Is that an extra motivating factor?
"Yes, as a Barça player this will be my first time, but I played there before with Porto. Of course there is more motivation as this is a very special game."
Is the 4-2 defeat last season out of the team's system?
"Barça lost the game when we were not expecting to. We know that anything can happen in these games. This year we are better prepared."
Do you think Barcelona can take all three points at the Bernabéu?
"Yes, I think we can pick up all the points. We just have to play the way we know and do everything right."
Is the one point difference in the league a realistic representation of the type of football that both sides have been playing?
"We are playing very well at the moment, just like we were at the start of the season, but we needed to put a few things right which we have. I think that the league will be harder to win this season than it was last year and I think that the eventual winner will decided nearer the end of the season this time and we have to be sure that it is us who prevails."
In what areas are Barcelona superior to Madrid?
"I think we are better as a team. We have some great players and we are more united as a team. So our chances of winning are greater."
In what areas are Madrid superior?
"The truth that there is no area. We have as many great players as them and, perhaps, our squad is more evenly balanced than theirs. They have great players who can turn a game at any moment, but I cannot think of any area where they are stronger than us."
How do you explain the high level of football and the sharpness in front of goal that Barça have shown in the last few matches?
"We have just carried on playing the same way that we always have, but we have now stopped conceding goals and that was very important. Also, we often score very quickly and that makes the games a lot easier."
Is Barça the best team, on current form, in Europe?
"I think that we have had four or five very good games, at least better than the before. At the moment things are going well, but I do not know if it is possible to say that we are the best or not. Maybe we are the best in Europe at the moment, but good runs can always come to an end, although we want it to last for as long as possible."
What similarities and what differences are there between this derby and the Porto and Benfica game?
"The main difference is the amount of people that are involved. Real Madrid - Barça is transcendent, it crosses the boundaries between Catalunya and Spain. I think it is a world class fixture as everyone has an interest in this match."
Is the huge interest from the media and the supporters an extra pressure on the players?
"No, on the contrary, it motivates us. You can play in many, many games, but you never forget games like this. When you look back on your career of 15 or 20 years it is these games that will stay in your memory."
What do you think of the Real Madrid team going into game?
"I think that we are in our best form, but we must not forget that we went into the game last season in good shape and lost. Real Madrid have great players and they are playing at home in front of their own fans. So we will have to go out and play the game of our lives and if we do then I am sure we will win."
What has changed at Barça from last season?
"We are stronger. We have more players, have more choices and have more competition for first team places."
Is the team more mature?
"Yes, after winning the league. Almost every player has stayed that played in the title win and some quality players have come in like Mark Van Bommel, Santi Ezquerro and Leo Messi and we have also got all the players back from injury."
What do Barcelona have to do to retain the title?
"Keep playing like we have been and realise that the league is not won in four or five matches. We know that we are doing well at the moment and we have to keep on winning points and we have to have confidence and character to keep on fighting through the tough times."
What do you think of the possibility that Ronaldo will play in the game?
"I prefer that he does play. In these games all the best players have to play and Ronaldo is one of those. On one hand it will be harder for us if he does play, but for the sake of the game it will be good if he is fit."
If he does not play will it make a big difference?
"Ronaldo is dangerous whenever he has the ball and for our defenders it will be more difficult if they have to mark him more than any other player."
What will the result be?
"I think that there will be a lot of goals. I would like it if we do not concede any and score three or four"
IN DETAIL
Van Bommel's injury
"During your injury you have had the chance to watch the team, so what do you think of Mark Van Bommel's performances."
"He has played very well. I know that he is a great player and it is always easier to come in and play well when a team is playing as well as we have been."
How much does a player suffer when he picks up an injury in the middle of such a good run of form?
"Ther eis no good moment to suffer an injury, it is the worst thing that happen to a player. The day when I got injured, against Osasuna, was very bad because I was just beginning to find my best form and they had decide not to operate on my hand because I was fully fit. When I picked up the injury it was like the roof caved in. I have watched all the games from the stands and sitting on the sidelines is very hard. Regarding Mark, he was delighted to be in the Dutch squad and no sooner does he join them then he picks up a knock. But he has a strong character and will overcome it."
With Van Bommel being such good form, did you fear for your place in the team?
"I never think about whether I will start or not. The only thing I think about is training like I have always done, then it is up to the coach to decide if I play. The only way to earn a place in the team, at either Barça or when I was at Porto, is to prove you deserve to be in training. If I am then chosen then it is because I have been doing things well."
With this good moment of Van Bommel, have you seen your titularity to be in danger? What differences are there between your style and Van Bommel's?
"We are different players. At Barça there is no problem about who plays, because we can all play together. The coach has 25 players to choose just 11 from and it is the same for me if Mark, Andrés Iniesta or Thiago Motta plays. Then only thing I want is what is best for the team and I know that I can add things to the team because people are happy with the way I have been playing."
