thx for posting those great pic's.... www.uefa.com/competitions/WorldCup/fixturesresults/round=1915/match=75246/Report=RP.htmlThree-point cushion cheers Portugal Portugal took an important step towards next year's FIFA World Cup finals with a 2-0 win against Slovakia at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon in qualifying Group 3. Tight at the top The two sides began the day level on points at the top of the section, with Russia defeating Latvia earlier on Saturday to join the top two with 14 points. With this victory, however, Luiz Felipe Scolari's side established a three-point lead in the standings ahead of Wednesday's next fixture, when the Portuguese visit Estonia while bottom side Luxembourg entertain Slovakia. Counterattack chance The UEFA EURO 2004™ runners-up started the game in confident fashion, urged on by 60,000 fans who witnessed some clever interplay between the Portuguese strikers in the early moments. For all the home team's possession, however, it was the visitors who came closest to taking a 16th-minute lead but, with only goalkeeper Ricardo to beat, Marek Mintál dragged his shot wide. Well-worked corner The Slovakian was made to pay for his profligacy five minutes later as the home side broke through with a well-worked corner. FC Barcelona playmaker Deco floated the set-piece towards Pauleta, whose deflection fell perfectly for Fernando Meira to rifle in at the far post. Portugal pressing Portugal threw men forward as they sought to build on that advantage with Slovakia seemingly shell-shocked, but Luís Figo was unable to convert Caneira's left-wing cross on the half-hour. Four minutes later central defender Jorge Andrade headed wide, before Cristiano Ronaldo's firm shot was well dealt with by Slovakian goalkeeper Kamil Contofalský. Fine free-kick It was 2-0 four minutes before the interval, however, Ronaldo finding a way past Contofalský with a superb free-kick from just outside the penalty area. The goal emphasised Portugal's dominance in a match refereed by veteran official Pierluigi Collina, taking charge of an international fixture for the last time. Portuguese dominance The two-goal cushion allowed Portugal to control the game in the second half, stroking the ball around at will. For their part Slovakia relied on swift counterattacks, but failed to trouble a well-marshalled Portuguese back line and will now seek to get back on track in Luxembourg on Wednesday.

Portugal edge past Estonia Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half header in Tallinn tonight helped Portugal take another step towards qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, but their win was hard-earned against a tenacious Estonia side. Deserved lead After dominating much of the opening period, Manchester United FC winger Ronaldo rose above Urmas Rooba to meet Luís Figo's cross on 33 minutes and give the visitors a deserved lead. Spurred on by a record post-war crowd of 10,300, Estonia responded well, and had opportunities to claim a share of the spoils but Portugal held on to their advantage. Kotenko heroics Ronaldo's goal was the culmination of early pressure by the UEFA EURO 2004™ finalists, which had seen Estonian goalkeeper Artur Kotenko make a succession of excellent saves. Deco, Maniche, Pauleta, Ronaldo and Figo were all denied but the FC Levadia Tallinn custodian was powerless just after the half-hour when Figo followed some terrific work on the right flank with a pin-point cross for Ronaldo to score. Pauleta miss Pauleta could, and perhaps should, have doubled the lead a minute later but under pressure from the recovering defence, he sent his shot wide. At this point a repeat of Portugal's 4-0 victory in the reverse fixture in September looked on the cards, but the expected deluge did not come. Oper incisiveness Indeed, after the interval, it was the home side that began to cause a threat and a minute after Andres Oper almost breached Luiz Filipe Scolari's side's defence with a powerful run, the FC Torpedo Moskva striker earned a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Dmitri Kruglov stepped up and his well-struck effort was deflected just wide of the target. Frenetic finale Deco was then brilliantly denied by Kotenko to set up a grandstand finale. Hélder Postiga could have sealed the win in the closing minutes but contrived to completely miss another superb Figo centre before substitutes Aleksander Saharov and Ragnar Klavan both spurned gilt-edge chances in added time. Portugal held on to retain their three-point advantage over Slovakia at the top of Group 3. Three-month break Scolari's side could cement that advantage in their next outing against the side propping up the section, Luxembourg, on 3 September. Estonia, who can now only aim at a play-off place, will face Latvia at home on the same day.
